Key West Boat Rentals

The only thing that is mandatory when you visit Key West is to get out on the water. There are many ways to do this.

Many involve taking a guided tour or a charter. There is another option though. You can simply rent a boat in Key West.

There are several companies that offer Key West boat rentals. Often these boats are 18 to 22 feet long. They are very seaworthy and come with a T-top. Some also come with a Bimini top to shade you from the sun.

One of the biggest obstacles of renting a boat in Key West is navigating the waters. There is a lot of shallow water around the keys. Especially on the northside where we call the backcountry.

Fortunately each of these Key West boat rental companies provide you with a GPS. GPS stands for global positioning system. This electronic device will give you a birds eye view of the keys and the water surrounding it. Many of the boat rental companies set up routes on the GPS. This is a simple way to guide you through channels and away from danger in shallow water.

Most boat rentals in Key West go for $400 for a few hours. This would enable you to get out to a remote beach and relax. You could also go fishing in the waters outside the reef. There is plenty of fishing inside the reef as well. Many of the boat rental companies also offer an option where you can charter a boat rental with a experienced captain. If you are somewhat leery about driving the boat your self a captain might be the best choice.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Key West?

The costs associated with renting a boat in Key West can vary from each charter company. One of the most competitive priced is Sunset Water Sports. They offer boats from 15 ft to 22 ft and they come complete with bimini top, live well, VHF radio and GPS. They have small 2 seat speed boats, pontoon boats, center console boats and small Carolina 17 skiffs. All are powered by 4-stroke efficient motors.
The costs can vary from $175 $350 for a half day (4 Hour) rental to $250 $425 for a full day (8 hour) rental. This is about half the price of a full blown charter with a captain, bait, fuel and fishing license (if you are going fishing). So you can save money if you have a few people going in on the boat with you.

Sunset Water Sports and most of the other companies require a $1000 deposit to ensure damages can be covered. There is also a boater safety course that must be completed by anyone under the age of 27. They offer the course to potential Key West boat renters and they do an exam before each tour for $4.00. The boater safety license is good for one year.
